EMPLOYEES’ PERCEPTIONS OF PENSION REFORM SCHEME: EVIDENCE FROM FEDERAL UNIVERSITIES IN SOUTHEAST NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examined the prospective pensioners ’perceptions of the pension reform scheme in federal universities in Southeast Nigeria. The study employed a mixed-methods research design. With a population of 13321, the sample size which was determined using Taro Yamani formula was 597 respondents. While descriptive analysis was conducted using frequency count and simple percentages and presented using tables and charts, the inferential analysis involved a test of hypotheses at 0.05 significant levels using Chi-Square. We found that care of the concerns about future financial security and transparency of pension managers are significant perceptions of the Academic staff regarding the management of pension scheme. The study concludes that contributory pension scheme must be strengthened by the government by removing every obstacle that hinders transparency of the system. It therefore recommends there is need for a further reform that will take care of the concerns about future financial security among academic staff.
